

- 12/11, Congratulations to Ben on his NSF-CAREER award. The five year award (670k) will support our ongoing investigations of land nitrogen cycling and Ben's advisement of SEEDS and Environmentors at UC Davis.
- 10/11, Congratulations to Alison and Ben for their recent paper on global nutrient interactions to be published in New Phytologist.
- 10/11, Ben gave a talk on carbon sequestration in forests and agriculture to a broad range of scientists and non-scientists at a special session meeting sponsored by the Division of Environmnental and Life Sciences . The meeting, held in Irvine, CA, spanned technical to natural solutions to reducing levels of atmospheric CO2.
- 08/11, Our paper on bedrock nitrogen and forest carbon storage has appeared in Nature. The press release can be found here.
- 07/11, Ben participated in and chaired a group of scientists who's aim is to understand inefficiencies in nitrogen use in the United States. The group's report will be submitted to the US Climate Assessment.
- 06/11, Ben gave a talk on the role of phosphorus in the global climate system at a joint European and US sponsored meeting in Iceland. The meeting included a host of experimentalists and theoretical modelers.
- 04/11, Ben gave a talk on the global ecology of nitrogen at Northern Arizona University. The talk can be heard here. Flagstaff is an amazingly vibrant place, with an excellent group of ecologists.

- 02/11, Ben co-authored two papers that appeared in a special issue on coupled biogechemical cycles in Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment.
- 01/10/10, Our work on climate change has been covered by Discovery Channel, MSNBC/Today, and Nature.
- 12/10, Ben, Alison and Scott presented at the AGU meeting in San Francisco.
- 10/10, Congratulations to Scott for winning the best student paper award at the Soil Science Society of America meeting.
- 09/10/10, Ben gave a keynote talk at the COST action meeting on Belowground Complexity in Ljubjlana, Slovenia. It was exciting to particpate in a small (70 people) meeting that included scientists from over 33 different nations. Slovenia is beautiful.
- 08/10/10, Alison and Ben gave talks at the Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society of America in Pittsburgh, PA. As always the meeting was both fun and intellectually engaging.
- 05/10/10, Ben received honorable mention considerations for the UC Davis teaching award.

- 10/28/09, Ben gave a talk to the biogeosciences program at Boston University. It's exciting to see a new program developing in this area, led by Dr. Adrien Finzi and colleagues.
- 9/4/09, Ben gave a talk to the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder. The visit was excellent.
- Week of 8/2/09, Edith, Scott and Ben presented research findings at the Ecological Society of America Meeting in Albuquerque. It was a great meeting.
- 5/19/09 - 5/21/09, Ben gave a talk at Penn State University's 17th annual Plant Biology Symposium in State College, PA. This year's symposium was on Plant-Soil Interactions in Future Climates. It was an excellent meeting, with talks from a very diverse group of scientists.

- 5/12/08 – 5/15/08, Ben participated in a National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) working group on “Revisiting nutrient limitation in tropical forests” lead by Cory Cleveland and Alan Townsend. The working group will meet two more times over the next year or so.
